Second grade is time of rapid scholastic growth at Northern Elementary, when learners develop independence and responsibility for their own learning and see how their work and ideas contribute to their environment.

Second grade also introduces a new level of academic challenge for young people. Many important advancements take place as students begin to apply their new academic skills to more diverse subjects. Young learners suddenly see the cosmos itself expand, literally and figuratively, as they come to understand the value of words and language, but also the important role numbers and mathematics play in describing nature. These new tools allow the mind – the intellect and imagination of young children – to grow and expand in new and exciting ways.
