| Allen- Wednesday 10:00-10:45 | McGowan-Friday 10:00-10:45 |
| Mackie-Wednesday 10:00-10:45 |
Students in sixth grade are allowed to borrow two books and one magazine and they may keep the materials for two weeks. They may renew them if they need the material longer. If the students forget their books on library day they will not be allowed to select new books. They will receive a verbal reminder unless the material is more than a month overdue. In this instance, a notice will be mailed home.
What's Happening in Class
Students in sixth grade learn:
how to use the computer card catalog (OPAC: on line public access catalogue) to look for books in the library;
how to use the School Library Media Center Web Site;
how to use the school's EBSCO electronic (web-based) research database subscription service;
participating in the RI Children's Book Award process, from book-talking to reading to writing book reviews and voting. This is a cornerstone of our curriculum and it is generously supported by the school PTA (thank you!!!). All students write a book review of their favorite RI Children's Book Award nominee; these are posted on the RICBA website (http://www.ri.net/RIEMA/bookaward.html );
reinforcement of the Dewey Decimal System and locating non-fiction books in the library;
how to access information uses indexes, table of contents, encyclopedias, and books;
review of research skills and the entire research process;
evaluate information for accuracy, the source of the information, the copyright date etc.;
how to read and extract pertinent information, to take brief notes, and how to then use their notes to write their report;
how to write a bibliography;
how to perform graded library research.
