Library Schedule for Grade 3

Students in third grade are allowed to borrow two books and one magazine and they may keep the materials for two weeks. They may renew them if they need the material longer. If the students forget their books on library day they will not be allowed to select new books. They will receive a verbal reminder unless the material is more than a month overdue. In this instance, a notice will be mailed home.
What's Happening in Class
Students in third grade learn:
how to use the computer card catalog (OPAC: on line public access catalogue) to look for books in the library;
the difference between Fiction and Nonfiction;
the different genres of fiction: Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Realistic Fiction, Adventure and Mystery;
introduction to the Dewey Decimal System and how to locate non-fiction books in the library;
about biographies, where to find them in the library and the important information that they contain;
introduction to research skills and the entire research process;
introduction to the School Library Media Center Web Site;
how to read and extract the pertinent information, to take brief notes, and how to then use their notes to write their report
how to write a bibliography.
