Fourth Grade Expectations Welcome to fourth grade! We know our grade has the reputation of being the stepping stone between lower and upper elementary and we’d like to explain some of our policies, procedures and expectations. Communication In addition to progress reports and report cards, you will be frequently informed of your child’s academic and social growth in a number of ways. These may include teacher letters and phone calls, weekly wrap ups, pieces of student work that are sent home, homework planner comments, etc. We realize that communication is a two-way street and that as your child’s first teacher, you may wish to contact us. Please feel free to write a note, call the office to leave a message or email us. We will respond to your message within 24 hours. We are happy to schedule a conference either by telephone or before or after school. Communication between school and home is paramount to your child’s success at school. Homework We assign homework each weeknight, for a total of approximately 45 minutes each night. Twenty to thirty of these minutes are independent reading, with the rest spent on a combination of Math, writing and/or studying. Some teachers also require reading on the weekend. In addition, we ask that you work with your child on Math facts, starting with addition and subtraction, with later focus on multiplication and division. This fact practice can take the form of flash card drills (which you and your child can borrow, buy or make), verbal exercises and written facts. Mastery of Math facts is very important for your child’s fluency in Math problems. Speed and accuracy also decrease a student’s frustration. Each teacher also assigns weekly spelling words and tests. The spelling lists are based on a spelling pattern and/or reading theme. Volunteering There are lots of opportunities to volunteer, either at school, in the classroom or at home. Please contact your child’s teacher if this interests you. Volunteering is a great way to be involved, help your school and model for your child what it means to give of your time. Discipline While we each have individual incentive programs, we have consistent behavioral expectations. The five character traits that we expect students to adopt are: to be responsible, be respectful, be helpful, be honest and be kind (Treat others the way you want to be treated). All of our classroom and recess student expectations encompass these guiding principles. You will see specific lists of guidelines posted in the classroom and around the building. Students who do not follow these guidelines are give consequences appropriate to the infraction. Depending on the severity, teachers and then building administrators will determine the consequences. You will be informed of the behaviors and consequences via phone call or letter. |
