Action Plan: Literacy     

Activity/Series: Guided Reading

Changes in Instruction:  What will teachers do to ensure students learn and develop the learning behaviors identified in the first column?  (Be sure that the instructional practices you identify will address every student learning behavior and connect to the Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards.)  Include all formal Professional Development activities/series that support the implementation of this action plan.

List all the Changes in Instruction from the Action Plan that apply:

Professional Development (PD) in support of Changing Instruction: For each formal Professional Development activity/series that support the implementation of this action plan, detail the PD that will support making those changes. Include:

1.       Describe the PD;

2.       Who will facilitate the PD;

3.       When the PD is scheduled to take place; and

How will the professional development implementation be monitored?

Sustained and Job Embedded: For each formal Professional Development activity/series that support the implementation of this action plan , describe how teachers will be provided opportunities for learning a skill(s) needed to ensure the change in student learning behavior, time to implement the skill in the work setting, and time to reflect upon the implementation.

 

Resources, School and District: What school-wide and district supports and resources will be necessary to implement the PD? Indicate the source of funds for each program of PD. (e. g., Article 31, Title I, etc.).

 

Evaluating Results:

1.       What evidence will the school use to draw conclusions about the impact and effectiveness of each major PD program? 

2.       Who will be responsible for organizing the evaluation? 

When will the evaluation activities take place and when will they be completed?
  1. Teachers will participate in various on-site job embedded training sessions during the 2009-10 school year to focus on Guided Reading.
  2. Reading Specialists and a special educator will facilitate the PDs.
  3. In January there will be a half day training.  Also, there will be a professional learning community to support literacy in January through March.  
  4. The work will be monitored by the completion of a successful implementation of Guided Reading in each classroom throughout the school by June, 2010.

Teachers are provided the opportunity to participate in the trainings, professional learning communities, and observe other classrooms that are implementing Guided Reading.  Teachers will also have time at grade level common planning meetings to work together on the implementation of strategies and for reflection. 

 

 

Title 1 funds

  1. Impact and effectiveness of Guided Reading will be discussed at designated staff meetings and future Professional Learning Community (PLC)/SIT meetings.   Some of the students work samples may also be reviewed at our grade-level meetings and S.I.T meetings.
  2. The principal will be responsible for organizing the evaluation.
  3. The evaluation activities will take place throughout the school year and will be completed by June, 2010.

Activity/Series:_Mathematics

 

Changes in Instruction:  What will teachers do to ensure students learn and develop the learning behaviors identified in the first column?  (Be sure that the instructional practices you identify will address every student learning behavior and connect to the Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards.)  Include all Changes in Instruction from the School Improvement Action Plan Template that this activity/series will impact.  The changes in instruction that this activity impacts are the following:

·          teach various strategies by explicit and repeated modeling

·          provide students with multiple opportunities in all content areas to problem solve and to justify their reasoning in writing

·          share and review math lessons and analyze student work to guide instruction

continue to use and increase the use of Everyday Math games to develop fluency with math calculations

When will the evaluation activities take place and when will they be completed?

1. The Math PD is connected to the RI Quality Professional Development Standards because it supports Quality Teaching. 

2. The teachers have been provided with research based instructional strategies and are prepared to implement a variety of classroom assessments appropriately.

3. The goal of the PD is to provide research based professional development on best practices in math.

4. The professional development opportunities provided to the teachers include Everyday Math conferences, the ER&D Thinking Math course, and the Dana Center Cohort.

5. Teachers that attend the professional development opportunities will be implementing the PD.

6. The Everyday Math training is during the summer and the consultants are available throughout the school year.  The ERD Thinking Math course will be offered in the 2009-2010 school year.  The Dana Center Cohort will be offered quarterly.

   7. Student progress with mathematics will be monitored by classroom assessments and an increase of NECAP scores. 

The teachers will be provided opportunities for ongoing collaboration and discussion regarding the Everyday Math program at weekly common planning times and monthly grade level meetings.  The teachers will also be able to support each other with the pacing of the Everyday Math program.  Teachers have the opportunity to observe classrooms to receive support.

The Everyday Math consultants will be available as needed throughout the year to support teachers.

 

Article 31 Funds - $4,100

 

LEA Funds

Impact and effectiveness of the Everyday Math training will be discussed at staff meetings, grade level meetings, and common planning times.  All teachers and the principal will be responsible for organizing assessment and NECAP data and disseminating it to the school community.

When will the evaluation activities take place and when will they be completed?

1.       PBIS-trained teachers will participate in full day advanced training workshops throughout the 2009-2010 school year.   The teachers will receive training from the Autism Project.

2.       The goal of the advanced training is to develop strategies to increase improved behaviors in the more at risk students and PEP.  The goal of the Autism Project is to learn about Social Thinking, Structured Teaching, and Positive Behavior Strategies.

3.       The PBIS PD is offered by the Lincoln School Department through the RI Department of Education, with full day workshops twice per year for PBIS members and several more workshops scheduled for the school’s PBIS coordinator.  The Austism Project will be offered at three faculty meetings throughout the year.

4.       Progress is monitored weekly by the decrease in referral forms sent to the office and the decrease in the unexcused absences.   Progress is also monitored quarterly by the increased participation of students in the incentive programs.

5.       Teachers will be afforded the opportunity for ongoing collaboration within the grade level and across grade levels during weekly Common Planning meetings, monthly staff meetings and monthly Grade Level meetings.

PBIS consultants are available throughout the year for additional support for the PBIS team, teachers and the PBIS program.

LEA fund

  1. The impact and effectiveness of the Health & Wellness Action Plan will be evidenced by decreases in behavioral referral forms, unexcused absences, and an increase in the student participation of the various incentive reward programs.
  2. The PBIS team will be responsible for organizing the evaluation results.

The evaluation results will be monitored weekly and the reporting of the results will be offered to the faculty during the monthly staff meetings and parents and community during “Open House”, and regular “Cliff” notes to parents, in the bimonthly PTA newsletter and during the regular Parent Involvement meetings throughout the year.
