LINCOLN MIDDLE SCHOOL RAISED OVER $3800 TO FIGHT LEUKEMIA!
Students at Lincoln Middle School raised $3865.50 in spare change from family and friends for the 14th annual Pennies for Patients 2008 fundraiser! The Rhode Island Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in partnership with Brink’s, Domino’s Pizza, HP Hood LLC, Loomis, Fargo and Co., and NBC 10, held this coin drive to raise funds for blood related cancer research and patient services. For three weeks, students in our school brought in spare change to this fun and educational program to fight the #1 disease killer of children ages 1-20…leukemia.
Two sixth grade advisory classes at the middle school coordinated the program, distributing flyers, donation boxes, and collecting and counting the coins of every classroom in the building. Teams held spirit days, such as pajama day, mismatch day, and wear green on St. Patrick’s Day where students would dress accordingly and donate $1.00 to the cause in order to compete for the top prize of lunch from Domino’s Pizza. Our winning team, composed of sixth graders, raised $1665.86 in just three weeks, contributing nearly half of the total money raised by Lincoln Middle School! Just one person can make a difference, but look what happens when an entire school works together and tackles a single goal!
Students who helped to coordinate the program include Kathleen Barbieri, Aysha Benway, Jake Borzain, Jossalyn Bourdony, Samuel Brito, Alana Buontempo, Francesca Carpano, Charice Cejas, Cameron Christo, Daryll Clay, Derrick Cochrane, Jared Defond, Kellyn Dyer, Devon Fielder, Robert Fredette, Derek Friedlander, Jason Gagnon, Matthew Genesse, Austen Gilbert, Justin Hall, Patrick Howe, Jonathan Karraz, Robert Lake, Brittany LaMountain, Kasey Laquerre, Samantha Martone, Nicole Meyerjack, Noah Picchi, Michael Rosario, Jenna Ruzzano, Cameron Smith, Michael Stevenin, and Noah von Heyden.
Last year 217 Rhode Island schools generously raised $274,950 and helped children struggling with leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, and myeloma. 73% of all funds raised go toward life-saving blood cancer research and patient aid. Participating in Pennies for Patients has helped thousands of students to experience what comes from working together to improve the lives of others. With tremendous advances in research, 80% of children with leukemia survive today, compared to a 4% survival rate in 1960!
Thank you to all who generously donated to our school! To learn more about The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the services they provide, please contact the Society office at 401-943-8888.
