Girls Game Reports and Pictures Lady Lions Update Week of 12/7/07 Lincoln v. Jenks. On Tuesday, December 4th, the Lady Lions basketball squad opened up on their home court against Jenks of Pawtucket. The young Lions, after a week of practice from their disappointing league opener at Bayview, showed marked improvement on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Lincoln was able to open up an 11-7 lead after the first quarter but Jenks came back and took a 19-17 lead at the half. The game was tied at 26 after three but the Lions caught fire both offensively and defensively and were able to earn the victory by the final of 44-36 thanks in large part to a defensive scheme to limit Jenks high scorer, Deandra Darosa (24 points after 3 but only 1 basket in the fourth) while Lion Jenna Desautel took over in the fourth period with 7 of her team high 9 points. Lion center Leah Sabatino (6 points and a ton of rebounds) controlled the glass, Hailey Lusiak (7 pts) and Dory Enright (7 points) helped offensively but the story of the game was the defense played by Jenna Desautel, Emma Hart and Casie Beauchemin on Darosa in the fourth. Lincoln v. Birchwood. On Thursday, December 6th, the Lions traveled to Birchwood, and the Lincoln defense produced its strongest effort of the young season in a 30-23 victory. Birchwood, with an intimidating front line, was handled effectively by the Lions disciplined defense and the inside defensive effort of Leah Sabatino, Jessica Carrignan and Dory Enright allowed the girls to control the defensive boards and the game. The Lions held Birchwood to 1 point in the first quarter and just 3 pts in the second to take a 16-4 lead at the half. Birchwood came roaring back in the third, cutting the lead to 20-17, before the Lions stepped up in the fourth led by Jessica Carrignan (team high 10 pts, 6 in the fourth). Catie Chatowsky (6 points), Leah Sabatino (4 points, 10 rebounds) and Jenna Desautel (tremendous defensive intensity and rebounding) helped lead the Lions to their second victory of the season. The Lions host Ricci Middle School next Tuesday, December 11th.
Week of 12/10/07 Lincoln v. Ricci. On Tuesday, December 11th, the Lady Lions squared off against a tough, veteran squad from Ricci Middle School in Metro League action. Ricci jumped on top early and often, building what would prove to be an insurmountable lead of more than twenty in the first half and defeating the Lions by a final score of 44-24, dropping the Lions to 2-2 in league while Ricci moved to 4-1. Lincoln did display some character and fight in the second half, playing pretty even and ten different Lions contributed in the scoring column for the Lions. Lincoln was sparked by Sixth grader Casie Beauchemin, seventh grader Ashley Moreau and the steady play of 8th graders Leah Sabatino and Dory Enright. Lincoln v. UCAP. On Friday, December 14th, in non-league action, the Lions rebounded nicely against UCAP for a convincing home win. The Lions displayed the defensive fire and intensity that they are capable of as all the twenty five Lady Lions got some game action and helped Lincoln to the victory. The Lions record, 3-4 overall and 2-2 in league, play on Tuesday against Slater at home.
Lady Lions Update Week of 12/21/07 Lincoln v. Slater. The Lady Lions roared out of the gate on Tuesday at home with their best offensive and defensive game of the young season, defeating Slater Middle School 42-17 to raise their league record to 3-2. The team defense and rebounding of the Lions was strong as Leah Sabatino, Dory Enright, Jessica Carrignan and Jenna Desautel controlled the glass. Offensively, captains Jessica Carrignan (13 pts) and Jenna Desautel (10 pts) led the way as ten different Lions contributed in the scoring column. Lincoln v. Calcutt. On Thursday, Lincoln traveled to Calcutt Middle School for a key Metro league match up in a battle for third place. It was one of the most consistent efforts of the season for the young Lions as the game seesawed back and forth throughout. Lincoln held a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and the game was tied at 17 at the half. It was 27 apiece at the end of three and Calcutt was able to hold on for a 38-34 victory. Jenna Desautel (career high 16 points) led the Lions in scoring while Leah Sabatino continued to be a workhorse on the boards. Annie Carroll (pt guard- 5 assists) played a great game as well as Jessica Carrignan, Catie Chatowsky, Dory Enright, Enma Hart and Hailey Lusiak. The Lions have nearly two weeks off till their next Metro league action, where they return on January 3rd to host Goff Middle School for the final game of the first half of the year. Lady Lions Update Week of 1/2/08 Lincoln v. Goff. The Lady Lions got the New Year off to a great start on Thursday, January 3rd, earning their fourth league win with a convincing 49-31 victory over Goff Middle School. Eighth grade center Leah Sabatino (career high 13 pts, 11 rebounds) led the Lions with her strongest performance while the strong inside play of fellow 8th grade forwards Jessica Carrignan (10 pts) and Dory Enright (8 pts) helped the Lions secure the win. As always, the team was fueled by the defensive intensity and leadership of Jenna Desautel as well as backcourt mates Catie Chatowsky and Emma Hart. Lincoln v. Bay View. Back to back games proved to be too much as the Lady Lions basketball team fell to reigning division champ and currently undefeated Bayview Academy by a final score of 41-26 at home on Friday, January 4th. The Lions gave the Bengals all they could handle at the start, displaying a defensive fire and intensity that kept the game close at the start. Bayview, clinging to a 12-10 lead after the first, went on an 11-3 run in the second to extend the lead to 10 pts and never looked back. The ladies from Lincoln never quit but couldn’t get their shots to fall and finally fell by the final of 41-26. Leah Sabatino continued her strong play inside and strong defense and rebounding by captains Jenna Desautel and Jessica Carrignan helped the Lions stay close. Lady Lions Press Release- Week of January 11th Lincoln v. UCAP. The Lady Lions hit the road this past week with plenty of success. On Wednesday, Lincoln traveled for a non-league game against Urban Collaborative. A slow start and some struggling first half offense had the score at 9-8 at the end of the first half. However, the Lions exploded in the second half on their way to a convincing 36-13 victory. The Lions bench, led by eighth graders Emma Hart and Dory Enright as well as seventh graders Hailey Lusiak, Ashley Moreau and Emmalee Mello triggered an intense second half of defense. Leah Sabatino (10 pts), Jenna Desautel (8 pts) and Jessica Carrignan (7 pts) led the balanced attack as 10 different Lions scored. Lincoln v. Jenks. On Thursday, Lincoln traveled to Jenks Middle School for a key match-up as both teams came in with identical 4-4 records. Lady Lions Basketball Update Week of 1/18
Ricci v. Lincoln. On Wednesday, January 16th, Lincoln traveled to Ricci Middle School to take on the powerful second place team who have only lost one game to undefeated Bayview. The Lions came out playing a tenacious defense this day, eager to avenge an early season loss to Ricci who blew them out early and often in their first match up. The defensive effort of the Lions was strong but Lincoln was limited on the offensive side and fell to Ricci by a final of 28-16. It was the team defense that really shined for Lincoln as they limited a strong offensive team and had themselves in a two point game at the half. Jenna Desautel, Leah Sabatino and Catie Chatowsky all chipped in offensively while those three along with the efforts of Annie Carroll, Jessica Carrignan, Emma Hart and Dory Enright did a tremendous job defensively. Birchwood v. Lincoln. On Friday, Birchwood Middle School arrived at the Lion’s Den for a big game in the battle for the final playoff spot in Metro league action. The Lions, triggered by a strong second quarter burst that saw them go from a one point lead to a ten point half time advantage, never looked back and held off a late fourth quarter surge by Birchwood to earn a hard fought 39-32 victory. The defensive pressure of the Lions as well as the strong contributions of many players helped Lincoln earn their 6th win of the season and stay in the hunt for a playoff spot. Seventh grade guard Hailey Lusiak came off the bench in the 2nd quarter and scored a career high 10 pts (all in that quarter) to push the Lions ahead. Jessica Carrignan (9 pts), Jenna Desautel (8 pts) and Annie Carroll (6 pts) all played strong games for the Lions. Special Note In a special note from this week, the Lions accomplished a team goal of sorts in the “fifth” quarter of this Birchwood game as several different players scored and with the final basket marked quite a moment as all 25 members of the Lions program have scored at least one basket this year. Congratulations to the entire group for this noteworthy accomplishment and your support of teammates throughout the year! Lady Lions Basketball Update Week of 1/25/08 The Lady Lions basketball team won their final four games of the regular season and with that run earned themselves a spot in next week’s state tourney. Here’s a breakdown of the last three games. Good luck ladies! Slater v. Lincoln. On Tuesday, January 22nd, the Lady Lions traveled to Slater Middle School for a Metro league matchup. The Lions battled hard, playing aggressive defense and responding to a physical style under the boards to earn a 38-22 victory. Thirteen different players scored for Lincoln in a balanced attack as eighth graders Dory Enright (8 pts), Jenna Desautel (6 pts), Jessica Carrignan (6 pts) paced the team. Seventh graders Emily Bouthillette, Hailey Lusiak and Annie Carroll all played well as did Leah Sabatino who controlled the paint for the Lions. Calcutt v. Lincoln. On Thursday, January 25th, the Lions faced probably their biggest game of the year as Calcutt Middle School arrived at the Lion’s Den in a battle to determine the third place slot in the Metro League. Both teams came in with 7-5 records with Calcutt having defeated the Lions twice already this season, the first in a pre-season match up by two points and the second in a four point league win earlier in the year. The Lions were certainly prepared for this, their final home game of the 2007-08 season, as they came roaring out of the gate, jumping out 15-3 at the end of the first quarter and held a commanding 24-5 lead at the half. Lincoln led by more than 20 heading in to the final quarter as all the Lincoln girls saw action and they won by a final score of 39-24. 8th grade captain Jenna Desautel had her strongest game of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while 7th grade point guard Annie Carroll continued her strong play with 7 pts and 7 assists. Jessica Carrignan ( 6 pts) and Emma Hart (chipped in with 4 pts and tremendous defense.). A special note- this was the final regular season home game for the 14 Lincoln eighth grade players and congratulations to Sarah Albanese, Alicia Andrew, Christina Carlino, Jessica Carrignan, Catie Chatowsky, Jenna Desautel, Dory Enright, Julia Gannon, Emma Hart, Kristen McKay, Marissa Nero, Amanda Paradis, Leah Sabatino and Meg Voyer. Goff v. Lincoln. The Lady Lions traveled to Goff Middle School for the regular season finale and came up with their best offensive game of the season, winning by a final of 56-22. The Lions broke open a fairly close game in the fourth quarter (34-20), running off 12 straight points to start. As has been the trademark all season, it was the balanced, unselfish play of the entire team that allowed them to earn their 9th win of the season and lock down a spot in next week’s state playoff tournament. Dory Enright led the way with 10 pts, while Catie Chatowsky, Jenna Desautel, Jessica Carrignan, Leah Sabatino, Emmalee Mello and Emily Bouthillette all chipped in with 6 pts each. A dozen different players scored and all 25 members of the team saw playing time.
On Monday, January 28th, the league playoff meeting will determine the seeds for the upcoming tournament. Good luck Lions!
Lincoln v. Park View. The Lincoln girls basketball team rode a hot end of the year finish in to the first round of the state playoffs and earned the right to host against Park View from Cranston on Wednesday. The game started slow as Park View held a slim 7-6 advantage at the end of the first quarter. But, the Lions changed up defenses, clamping down on their opponents leading scorer and holding Park View to just one field goal in the next three quarters to take a 30-13 win and move on to the next round of the playoffs. The Lions were keyed by some tremendous individual and team defense with Jenna Desautel (5 pts), Emma Hart and Hailey Lusiak doing an amazing job and shutting out the leading scorer for Park View. Jessica Carrignan was a warrior on the offensive end, leading all scorers with 12 points, while Dory Enright (5 pts) and Emmalee Mello (5 pts) also helped out. The Lions move on to play against top seed and undefeated Ponagansett on Friday night. Lincoln v. Pongansett. The Lady Lions 2007-08 season came to an end on Friday as the girls traveled to Pongansett to square off against the top seed in the tourney. The multi-talented Chieftiens proved too be just too much for the Lions and won by a final of 65-35. However, the Lions certainly displayed the character and intensity that had propelled them so far this season in the middle of the game. After going down 21-5 in the first, the Lions battled back and had closed the game to 32-22 at the half. At the start of the third, the Lions scored first and cut the seemingly insurmountable lead to just 8 pts but were unable to handle the Ponagansett run at the end. Leah Sabatino played a tremendous game for the Lions, scoring 10 pts and 11 rebounds, while 7th graders Hailey Lusiak (6 pts, 3 steals), and Annie Carroll (6 assists) played well in addition to the steady leadership of captains Jenna Desautel (4 pts, 11 rebounds, 4 steals) and Jessica Carrignan (4 pts). Congratulations to the entire Lions group, with all 25 members of the program seeing some playoff action and the entire team making so much improvement from the start. Best of luck to the 8th graders as they move on and we look forward to seeing the returning core next year. “In my 20 years of coaching basketball at all different levels, I have never been more pleasantly surprised or impressed by the marked improvement, both individually and as a team, of this year’s Lincoln squad. This group dedicated itself to improving every single day and gave everything they had, both on and off the court for the past three months. I am very proud of the character and teamwork displayed by the girls, they are certainly a special group and one that the entire community should be proud of." Jon Bruckner |

Lady Lions Give Back in a Big Way So many times in the world of sports, the true lessons of character and success are missed. The Lady Lions basketball team is making sure that they are learning their lessons in the classroom, on the court as well as at the mall! This year’s team raised nearly $850 by running the second annual Holiday HoopFest (LMS staff vs. LMS 8th grade players). The entire group then headed out to the Lincoln Mall for a night of shopping and then spent another afternoon before practice wrapping all the gifts. Thanks to the girls for the great effort as well as to all the staff, parents and students who supported the event! See you again next year!
