Agenda Item

Old Business

1.      Treasurer’s Report – Mike Turgeon

a.       Current balance:  Approximately $13,000.00.  Note:  This balance includes $6,000.00 appropriated for the Lincoln Middle School sign and $1,000.00 appropriated for Camp Bournedale.

b.      Majority of monies received are due to the success of the Readers Digest fundraiser.

c.       Monies disbursed throughout the year (detailed in prior meetings’ minutes which can be seen on the Lincoln Middle School website) were for items including but not limited to:  funded-Team field trips, books, a camera, Junior Achievement courses, teacher-appreciation luncheon, NECAP snacks, and a grant for the high school graduation party.

d.      PACT is still waiting for approximately $2,700.00 from QSB (Readers Digest).

2.      Reader Board – Angelo Mancucci

a.       Mr. Mancucci stated his original charges were to:

                                                           i.      obtain bids

1.      Bids ranged from $10,000.00 to $36,000.00.

2.      Note:  the existing sign close to the LMS building cost $46,000.00.

ii.      research feasibility of sign location

1.      Angelo worked with three companies to study the benefit of a sign being located near the entrance of LMS.

2.      There should be at least 5 seconds available to a driver to read a sign.  Given the curve of Jenckes Hill Road, drivers coming from the north (heading south) would have less than the optimal (and minimal) 5 seconds to read a sign located near the road.

3.      FYI:  Lights on any illuminated sign would have to be turned off at 9:00 PM, thus lessening the value of an illuminated sign located near the road.

b.      In 2006-07, PACT received a bid and allocated $6,000 for the placement of a non-illuminated sign Reader Board at the entrance of the Lincoln Middle School. The plan was reviewed by the School Committee. The Committee suggested that the board be more in line with the decor of the campus. The committee noted that they would pay for the difference in price that the change would cause.

c.       Thought process at conclusion of discussion: The existing sign, located near the LMS building, would be modified/extended to include lighting and a bottom for enumeration of events, dates, and other school information.

d.      Ed Cummins indicated that the School Committee should be involved in review of these suggested change in sign plans.

3.      Crosswalk to fields across from LMS

a.       Angelo Mancucci indicated crosswalks are under the mandate of Department of Transportation and would be handled through the town.

b.      Who would monitor?

4.      Patio

a.       Note: although there was discussion regarding this matter, the conclusion reached at the School Improvement Team (SIT) Tuesday, May 20, 2008 rendered this May 19 discussion moot.

b.      The discussion at the May 20 SIT meeting concluded that, given that each grade – sixth, seventh, and eighth – would have its own lunch period - a 30’ by 30’ patio with six or seven tables, would not effectively serve approximately 300 students.

c.       Adding additional walls for students to sit on was recommended.

5.      School Kits –Kris Turgeon

a.       The goal is to offer parents the opportunity to purchase a school-supply kit for the 2008-09 school – each will be apropos for a grade rather than a specific team.

b.      Order forms and Responses

                                                                           i.      Sent home via backpacks the week of May 12.

ii.      Posted on the PACT website.

iii.      Responses and orders are due no later than May 30.

c.       Costs to parent

                                                                           i.      Sixth grade - $38

                                                                         ii.      Seventh grade - $39

                                                                        iii.      Eighth grade - $33

d.      Kits can be picked up at the Sunday August 24, 2008 welcome-back barbecue.

New Business

6.      A great big “Thank You” to Lincoln Middle School PACT especially, Pattie Walsh, Mike and Kris Turgeon, for the wonderfully delicious “Teacher Appreciation Week” luncheon.  Lincoln Middle School teachers appreciate your efforts.

7.      8th Grade Celebration/Awards Night on June 2 at Venus de Milo.

Contact Mrs. Gould at gouldj@lincolnps.org for information

8.      Farewell Festival on June 6 – Profits to benefit sixth-grade students staying back from Camp Bournedale.  Volunteers, food donations needed.

            Contact Mrs. Burlingame at burlingamej@lincolnps.org

9.      Sunday August 24, 2008 Back-to-School Barbeque

a.       Volunteers needed for event.

b.      Chairpersons:

                                                                           i.      Deb McManus

                                                                         ii.      Cindy Strain

                                                                        iii.      Lisa Zammaarelli

c.       Suggested activities:  handout schedules as students arrive, have a couple of raffles instead of soliciting multiple businesses for donations, and have just ice cream, cookies and juice instead of hot dogs and hamburgers.  The committee will ultimately decide the format and activities for the day.

Re:                  Back to School Supplies

For the second year, we will be offering incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders the chance to purchase their back to school supplies long before that last stressful week before school.  These supply kits include the majority of supplies they will need to get them through the school year.  There will be a few odds and ends teachers may require, but by purchasing a kit you can be assured that your child will have the supplies they need to begin the school year.  Prices are competitive, and all the supplies are delivered to the middle school for you to pick up at the Back to School Barbeque in August.  The program is completely voluntary.

Forms and checks must be returned to PACT by May 30th

Kits can NOT be purchased at the barbeque, you must pre-order!!

Checks should be made out to:  Lincoln Middle School PACT.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Kris Turgeon at 333-4980 or kbt2@cox.net.

Lincoln Middle School Parent Group Receives Award

Congratulations to our LMS PACT group for being selected as the winner of the 2005 New England League of Middle Schools Parent and Community Group Award!  What an honor!  The purpose of this award is to recognize parent and community groups who value, understand and support effective middle level education.

Robert Spear, Executive Director of NELMS writes in his letter, "It is obvious from the materials that we received that the group understands how young adolescents learn and that the group is a champion of and actively promotes middle level education.  The group has built community support for middle level education, and recognizes that middle level education is a distinct entity within the K-12 educational system."

Two representatives of the LMS PACT will be invited to be guests of NELMS at the 24th Annual Conference Recognitions Reception held this year on March 20, 2005 at the RI Convention Center.

Bruce J. Macksoud, Principal of LMS said, "I am so proud of our PACT organization for their hard work, and all of the things they have done for our school this year!"  "They are so involved in all we do behind the scenes as well, such as being on our school improvement team and sub-committees that are working tirelessly trying to flesh out ideas of what our new middle school and programs should look like." "I can't think of any other group more deserving of this prestigious award!"
