Background:
· P.E. is more than changing and playing games.
· P.E. involves health-related fitness assessments, goal-setting and skill development.
· Stretching and warm-ups are a part of EVERY CLASS.
Supplies needed:
· Combination lock for locker room
· Change of clothes and sneakers for each class. Shorts, T-shirts, sweatpants, sweatshirts etc… Students need to change their entire outfit and have on athletic footwear for each PE class. Half credit will not be granted!
· Deodorant is highly recommended!
Responsible Behavior (see rubric) We will enforce and ensure that all school rules are followed as presented in the LMS student handbook as well as the following:
· Follow all rules and instructions for physical education and locker room.
· Arrive in the locker room ON TIME and change promptly.
· No food, drinks or GUM are allowed in the gymnasium.
· After changing for class enter the gym and follow warm-up procedures.
· If you are not changing, put your things in a locker and exit the locker room immediately.
· Use self-discipline and patience when participating in class activities.
· Entire class warm-up will occur each day: improving strength and conditioning (ex: push-ups, crunches, running). If a student does not participate in the class warm up, they will not be allowed to participate in any class activities until they have completed the warm up on their own.
· Treat all equipment with respect. Do not TOUCH equipment or enter the equipment closet without permission from a teacher.
· No swearing or inappropriate language.
Disciplinary Action Sequence:
· Verbal warning
· Exclusion from activity
· Call parents and/or write a note home
· Teacher detention
· Refer to administration
Behavior that will result in immediate administration action:
· Fighting
· Swearing or gross insubordination displayed to teacher
· Actions that compromise the safety of others: bullying, threats, misuse of equipment…
Violations of class rules:
· Points will be taken off of the responsible behavior grade each time an infraction occurs. The amount of points taken off depends on the severity of the offense. Each day, students will start off with 10 points for responsible behavior and participation. If the student behaves responsibly and participates the entire time, they will maintain that grade.
Participation:
· Try your best in each activity
· Watch and listen carefully to the teacher and student demonstrations
· Practice skill correctly
Skill Assessment:
· Skills will be assessed on proper technique rather than athleticism.
· Effort is more important than ability.
Excuses and Make-Up Work:
· Students are allowed 4 excused absences per trimester.
· A note from a parent is good for 2 days only.
· Students that are going to be excused for more than 2 days need to get a doctor’s note stating the reason, length of excuse and return time.
· Make-up work will be assigned for each excused absence over 4 days.
· 5 points are deducted for each day an assignment is late. After 2 weeks, it will not be accepted.
Assessments will include:
· Physical Education Skills, Responsible Behavior and Class Participation
· Test/Quizzes/Homework
· Skills-will be graded during each activity using both teacher observation and assessments
· Students will be assessed using the Rhode Island Physical Education Standards.
· Uniform
Grading:
· Responsible Behavior (Rubric) 20%
· Participation (Rubric) 25%
