Why write a review?
A book review is written as
a way of organizing your thoughts about a particular book.
It is written to relate events that happen in a book and to give
an opinion about the book. You may want to comment on a
book because you feel strongly about it, whether you like it or
dislike it.
Who will be reading the review? (Audience)
The fourth through sixth grade
students will be reading our reviews along with the teachers,
our parents and our brothers and sisters. We should make
sure the reviews are interesting and informative so they will
be valuable to our audience.
What should a book review include?
The first paragraph of the
review should tell what the book is about. It should include
the following:
- A brief description of the main characters
(personalities, feelings)
- A brief description of the setting (where
and when)
- A brief description of the plot, including
the conflict...but never the outcome (don't give away the ending)
The second paragraph should tell my opinion. It should include:
- Why you liked the book or did not like
it. The book’s strengths and/or its weaknesses.
- How this book compares to other books
you've read that are similar to it (same genre).
