Writing Book Reviews

Why write a review?

A book review is written as a way of organizing your thoughts about a particular book.  It is written to relate events that happen in a book and to give an opinion about the book.  You may want to comment on a book because you feel strongly about it, whether you like it or dislike it.

Who will be reading the review? (Audience)

The fourth through sixth grade students will be reading our reviews along with the teachers, our parents and our brothers and sisters.  We should make sure the reviews are interesting and informative so they will be valuable to our audience.

What should a book review include?

The first paragraph of the review should tell what the book is about.  It should include the following:

  1. A brief description of the main characters (personalities, feelings)
  2. A brief description of the setting (where and when)
  3. A brief description of the plot, including the conflict...but never the outcome (don't give away the ending)

The second paragraph should tell my opinion.  It should include:

  1. Why you liked the book or did not like it. The book’s strengths and/or its weaknesses.
  2. How this book compares to other books you've read that are similar to it (same genre).

A Plan for Writing a Book Review

  1. Read the book
  2. Brainstorm (see below)
  3. Using your notes, write the first draft.
  4. Revise and edit with peers and teachers.
  5. Present your final copy of the book review.

    Brainstorming Tips

  • What happened in the book?
  • Describe the main characters
  • Describe the setting (Where and when?)
  • Details the plot (development of the events, conflict)
  • Your opinions  (strengths, weaknesses, emotions
                Comparisons to other books)
