The Mystery of Victor Taylor

“Oh my gosh,” Casey blurted as she stepped into her house.

“What happened here?” she said with her mouth wide open.

This is what happened.  The three girls Casey, Amanda, and Rachel were walking home from school.   It was Friday, Amanda and Rachel were sleeping over Casey’s house.  They were so excited.  When Casey walked in the door she was worried why there were broken plants and things on the floor.  That made Casey, Amanda and Rachel feel scared. “Anyone home?” hollered Casey.

There was silence, nobody answered. Amanda  was  very brave, daring and serious. On the other hand, Rachel and Casey were not brave, they were chickens. Casey and Rachel were terrified when they saw the back door smashed and opened.  Amanda was scared but didn’t show it. Amanda knew that somebody had broken in and stolen something but what was it and who stole it? That was the mystery.  Rachel and Casey didn’t know what happened because they were too scared to think right then. All of a sudden,  the phone rang and they all jumped.

Casey bolted for the phone, and she looked at the caller ID. Since  her mom was  calling she immediately picked up the phone.  “Casey, are you okay?”

“What happened here?”

Her mom continued, “Someone’s broken into our house.”

“Are you coming home?”  asked Casey. “Where are you ?”

“Yes I’m coming home. Look in the driveway,” her mom replied. Casey sprinted to the window and she saw that her mom was there. Amanda and Rachel ran to see what was  the matter and they saw Miss Pickett.  The three of them ran outside to meet Casey’s mom.  “I’m so happy to see you,” Miss Pickett said.  Then she gave the three girls a hug.

When she walked in the house Miss Pickett was stunned.  Her mouth was moving but nothing came out. Finally Miss Pickett said, “Look at this place, it’s such a mess.”

“Well they might come back because I have a feeling they didn’t get what they wanted,” Miss Pickett said cautiously. “So Casey, pack all your things, okay?” she commanded.

Casey, Amanda and Rachel followed upstairs  to Casey’s bedroom to help her pack. Amanda said that she had to go to the bathroom but she really didn’t need to go. She just wanted to think by herself. When she was in the bathroom she locked the door and sat on the floor.  Amanda thought and thought and thought.  Amanda was thinking of who could have broken in and what they could have stolen.  Then, in the corner of her eye she saw a wallet.

The wallet was brown, it was folded many times. It was very big and cards were sticking out. Amanda saw an ID. She grabbed the card and read the name. The name was Victor Taylor. Then she looked at the pictures of Victor Taylor. He was ugly. He had a big nose that was very pointy and his eyes were brown. Victor Taylor was hairless on some spots on his head. The hair he did have was white.

When she looked closer she realized that his hair was a brownish white because his hair was so dirty and old. His mouth was in a slump smile. Victor’s teeth? Well he really didn’t have any teeth but what he did have were brown and green and if near him when he talked, others probably would faint because the outrageous smell that flared from his mouth. Amanda grabbed the wallet and ID, and ran to Casey’s room were Rachel and Casey were packing.

When Amanda got there she exclaimed, “Casey, Rachel, look what I found in the bathroom. It’s the wallet of the thief and his name is Victor Taylor. Look, here is his ID!”

Casey and Rachel stopped what they were doing and looked at the ID. “I would think that he would be too old to be a robber,” commented Rachel.

“His name is Victor Taylor, what a weird name,” Casey said.

“Let’s go tell your mom,” demanded Amanda.

They went into Miss Pickett’s room to show her the ID. When she saw the ID she said, “Where did you find this?”

Amanda showed Miss Pickett where she found the wallet, because Casey and Rachel did not know exactly where she had found it. They just followed along.  Amanda opened the door to the bathroom. She ran to the window, bent down and said, “Right here, this is exactly where I found it.”

Miss Pickett interrupted, “I am missing one hundred dollars.”

"Maybe he tried to put the money in his wallet and then he went to put it in his pocket.

He must not have put the wallet in all the way because he was rushing.  So when he climbed out the window it fell out of his pocket!” exclaimed Amanda. Amanda continued, “Did you have something written on the hundred dollars, Miss Pickett?”

     Miss Pickett replied,  Yes, SP.”

Casey grabbed the wallet from Amanda, opened it and looked in all the pockets. In a few seconds she found the money pocket.  She took out one hundred dollars and it had SP on it, Miss Pickett’s initials, so Amanda was right. Casey handed the money to her mom. Casey remembered  something that she didn’t see, that she had on her bed when she left for school that morning.

“Wait.” Casey ran to her room and yelped, “I’m missing my wallet, all my credit cards, my money, and my cell phone is gone!”

“But why would a man want a pink cell phone?” Rachel and Casey began to argue about why the cell phone may have been stolen. Soon they were yelling at each other until Amanda became annoyed.

“Are you going to take this seriously, yes or no?” Amanda proclaimed. Before Casey and Rachel could answer Amanda blurted out. “I hope so, because somebody just robbed your house, this is not a joke.” Then Rachel and Casey started to fight again about  the cell phone. “You know what, I’m not going to help you.” Rachel and Casey stopped fighting for the second time. “You guys think it’s a joke, so you figure it out by yourself.” Amanda rapidly strolled to the door. On the way she bumped Casey’s shoulder on purpose. She ran down the stairs, grabbed her backpack, and bolted out the door. Amanda ran to her house without stopping.

Meanwhile Miss Pickett, Casey, and Rachel were all in the kitchen packing some things.

They were all so miserable. Miss Pickett was thinking, I wish Amanda was here so we could be done. What were Casey and Rachel thinking.  Amanda was right, why were they fighting over a cell phone when her house was robbed.  Miss. Pickett was outraged with Casey and Rachel. Without thinking she said aloud, “Girls, why were you fighting over cell phones? You shouldn’t be fighting over stupid cell phones.”

“I don’t know,” whispered Casey.  Then Rachel whispered,

“I’m sorry.” Miss Pickett walked away from them and went to finish packing upstairs.

When Miss Pickett came downstairs a little later she asked, “Casey did you finish packing the kitchen?”

“Yes we did,” Casey replied. Miss Pickett called her sister  to ask if she could stay at their house.

Miss Pickett and Rachel hopped in the car and drove off to their new home!

Casey ran downstairs to the basement and her mouth dropped.

Casey was not used to all of this stuff, her mom was not wealthy. The basement had two rooms that were separated from each other.

The basement had a small kitchen with black and white tiles and several closets. There was an air hockey table and a pool table, flat screen television with a Wii and a GameCube. Casey was so excited. There were spaces for furniture and beds. Casey was going back and forth to help carry in all the things. As soon as all of the boxes, bags, and furniture were in the house they started unpacking. Casey was mad that Amanda wasn’t  with them.  Casey decided to call her to tell her where she was and where she was going to live.

Later they were done unpacking and Rachel was laying on the bed. Casey was on the opposite side and she was all wound up. She jumped up and ran to get her mom’s cell phone, ready to call Amanda but then the cell phone rang. It was a Amanda on the other line.

Casey knew she was going to get a lecture from Amanda and that’s exactly what happened. The girls apologized and Amanda was going to sleepover as planned.

In a few minutes Casey heard the doorbell and she bolted upstairs to open the door for Amanda.  “Hey Amanda,” Casey said. “Come on in, we have to get started right away.”  Casey and Amanda ran downstairs to meet Rachel.

Casey spoke first.  “Well they stole a hundred dollars, credit cards, my cell phone and my money.”

Amanda started talking, “Okay, so we know what he looks like, we know what his name,  but we don’t know where he lives and we don’t know his phone number.” Then Amanda looked closer at the ID and she realized his number was written, 555-6408. “Bingo.” said Amanda. “We got his number but we still don’t know where he lives.”

“Look, Look, it says where Victor Taylor lives. He lives on Jail Street. What kind of street is that?”

“Weird I’d say,” replied Rachel. “Do you know where Jail Street is?” Rachel asked.

“I do,” Casey murmured.

“We can just ring all the door bells on the street and then we can look at all the faces of the people who open the door and then we can see if it’s Victor Taylor. That’s going to be really weird,” Casey said. So Casey asked her mom, and her mom struggled to say yes. But in the end she agreed. They all hopped in the car and traveled to Jail Street. When they got to the street Casey was so nervous, and so was everyone else, even Miss Pickett. They were all shaking. The three girls Casey, Amanda, and Rachel stepped out of the car. Amanda was walking up the stairs but Casey and Rachel were still frozen next to the car. “Come on,” Amanda ordered, “don’t be chickens.”

Casey started walking toward Amanda, and Rachel was following. When the three girls reached the door Amanda rang the door bell! The door opened. It was not Victor Taylor, but Rachel asked anyway. “Hi, does Victor Taylor live here?”

“No, I’m sorry he does not. He lives up the street,” the person replied.

“Oh! Thank you, I’m sorry we disturbed you,” Casey said.

Casey, Amanda and Rachel ran to the car and opened the door and sat down. “Well we know that Victor Taylor lives up the street but what house?” asked Rachel.

“Well, we are going to ring the door bell of every house to find where Victor Taylor lives,” Amanda planned.

“Ok,” Casey and Rachel replied.  Miss Pickett drove up the street. They saw a house but not just any ordinary house. It was a scary house and there was no other houses around. So  the three girls got out of the car.

Casey gulped. Even though Amanda was brave, she didn’t feel it right now. They went up to the door and Amanda reached out to ring the doorbell but she hesitated.  Casey rang the door bell and then pulled her hand away. They were all so frightened.

Finally the door opened. Amanda glanced to the left and saw a number on the house. It was 56. The man at the door was Victor Taylor. He looked just like the picture on the ID. The three girls hadn’t thought this far. They started to scream and ran to the car. They opened the car door and hopped in. “Mom, that’s him! What are we going to do!” shouted Rachel.

“We have to call the police.”

Miss Pickett got the phone and dialed 911.  When the police arrived at Victor’s house he wouldn’t come out so they had to bang down his front door. But in the end Victor Taylor was arrested and Casey got all the things back that he stole. As they brought Victor out in handcuffs to the police car, the three girls smiled and waved goodbye.
