PROPOSED LINCOLN MIDDLE SCHOOL

 

Special Note to the Reader: What follows is intended to approximate program and building issues and is not meant to be a complete program or space prescription.

 

I.  Projected Enrollment

 

    What follows is based on the following student enrollment:

 

a.      Grade 6 - 333

b.     Grade 8 - 333

c.      Grade 8 - 333

 

             Total    -  999  (includes 50 special education students in partially self-contained classrooms)

 

II.    Organization for Instruction

 

       Organized by grades around a seven period rotating day and a five day scheduling week, a total

       of thirty-five (35) scheduling periods per week. Students are grouped homogeneously

       (Levels 1-3) in core subjects (English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science). Reading is

       added as a fifth core subject in Grade6 and 7.

 

A.    Class Size

 

1.     Regular Education classes - maximum of 27

2.     Basic Level classes - maximum of 11

3.     Special Education classes - maximum of 10

 

B.  Grouping - homogeneous grouping in academic subjects; heterogeneous grouping in Unified

      Arts classes

 

 C.  Teaching Teams

 

       1.  Grade 6

 

a.      Three teams (111 students assigned to each, total of 333) for the five core subjects meeting daily (English, Mathematics, Reading, Social Studies, and Science).

b.     Library Skills and Team Activity - meet one period weekly for each

c.      Unified Arts Subjects - Physical Education and Health, Art, Music, and Computer

Technology (Each meets three times weekly for one semester and twice weekly for

the alternating semester, a total of 90 meetings.)

 

       2.  Grade 7 

 

a.      Three teams (111 students assigned to each, total of 333) for the five core subjects

      meeting daily (English, Mathematics, Reading, Social Studies, and Science)

 

b.     Unified Arts Subjects - Physical Education and Health, Family and Consumer Science,

      Introduction to Computers, Band, and Chorus (Each meets three times weekly for one

      semester and twice weekly for the alternating semester, a total of 90 meetings.)

 

            3.  Grade 8

 

a.      Three teams (89 students assigned to each, total of 267 for the four core subjects meeting daily (English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science)

 

b.   Unified Arts Subjects - Physical Education and Health, Industrial Technology, Art,

 Music, Band, and Chorus (Each meets three times weekly for one semester and twice

 weekly for the alternating semester, a total of 90 meetings.)

 

4.     Projected special education enrollment of 50 students.

 

III.  Regular (Interchangeable) Classrooms Needed

 

A.    Grades 6 - 8 for Teaching Teams.

 

1.     Grade 6 - 12 (3 teams x five sections in each = 15); also used for team activities, teacher

                      preparation, meetings, etc.)

       2.   Grade 7 - 12 (3 teams x five sections in each = 15); also used for team activities, teacher

                      preparation, meetings, etc.)

       3.   Grade 8 -   9 (3 Teams x four section in each = 12); also used for team activities, teacher

                      preparation, meetings, etc.)

 

B.   Special Note to the Reader re Science Teaching Spaces:

 

       1.   Grade 6 - One of the spaces for each of the three teams should be equipped for science.

       2.   Grade 7 - One of the spaces for each of the three teams is to be a Science Laboratory/

          classroom.

       3.   Grade 8 - One of the spaces for each of the three teams is to be a Science Laboratory/

           classroom.

       4.   Of the total of 42 team instructional spaces noted in A. immediately above, nine (9) of

 them are to be Science spaces.

 

C.    Other Courses not Part of the Teaching Teams

3.     Introduction to Computer - Grade 7 for 90 meetings - Same as Family and Consumer Science - 2 spaces (incorporates Grade 6 use as well)

4.     Music - Grade 8 for 90 meetings - Same as Family and Consumer Science - 2 Spaces (incorporates Grade 6 use as well)

5.     Band - Grade 7 for 90 meetings

6.     Band - Grade 8 for 90 meetings  

7.     Chorus - Grade 7 for 90 meetings

                 Note: 1 Music Room to service both the Band and Chorus programs

quarter - 1 Industrial Technology Laboratory (Incorporates Grade 6 use as well.)

a.      Grade 6 for 90 meetings -333 divided by two = 166.5 students divided by 27 = 6.17
