Middle School Program

The following program is not meant to be viewed as the exact or actual program that will be developed for a new middle school.  We performed this evaluation and development of spaces solely to identify the total square footage of the building so that we could project its cost magnitude.

The conceptual design included is solely meant to convey our design ideas of the concept of providing a new school which performs as two small middle schools.  This conceptual design allows for a 500 student, two story classroom wing with associated administration spaces.  In each of these houses, the students would not interact with the other house, and all of the circulation to the core spaces and other classrooms would be done without circulating through other grades or the other school.

This design concept also allows for public use of space, such as the cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasium and library, by a community without entering the academic side of the school.  We have successfully designed the Pell Middle School in Providence, which is a 750 student complex designed as two separate schools that share common core facilities.  This design has been very successful in creating the atmosphere of two small middle schools while providing the cost efficiency of shared core facilities.
