2. Computing Square Footage (see p. 18 of Rhode Island Guidelines)

 

a.    Net Square Footage - measure from the inside face of enclosing walls and partitions (wall thickness is excluded.

  

          (1). Basic Instructional Space - net area of all non-specialized and special subject

                teaching areas including classroom preparation and classroom storage areas.

                Include gymnasiums, auditoriums and libraries in this category.

 

          (2). Miscellaneous Educational Space - net area of miscellaneous specified or

                required educational space such as gymnasium locker rooms, cafeteria dining

                areas, kitchens, administrative offices, health services unit, guidance offices,

                teacher workrooms, general educational storage, community rooms and

                serving rooms.

 

          (3). Other Space - Subtract the basic instructional and miscellaneous educational

                space from the gross square footage. Other will include wall thicknesses;

                corridors, stairways and other circulation space; general storage areas;

                custodial areas; toilets; and heating and mechanical spaces.

 

      b. Gross Square Footage

 

          The gross area is the sum of all areas on several floors including mezzanines,

          stairwells, and basements having a floor slab and 7’0” or more of headroom.

          Additionally, covered walkways, roofed-over areaways or courts, or similar areas

          should be included in the gross area at one-half their value.

 

          All horizontal measurements should be taken from the exterior face of enclosing

          walls at the plane of the floor. The following should not be included in the gross

          area: basements having no floor slab or less than 7’0” of headroom; pipe trenches;

          retaining walls; roof overhangs; exterior terraces, and courts open to the sky.

 

4.   Gross Square Footages (see p. 17 of R.I. Guidelines)

 

a.    Elementary schools: not more than 115 square feet per pupil (kindergarten enrollment should be halved if the kindergarten is half day).

b.   Junior high schools/Middle school: not more than 135 square feet per pupil.

c.    High schools: not more than 155 square feet per pupil.

d.   Vocational-Technical schools: not more than 225 square feet per pupil
