Lincoln High School
English Summer Reading
Grades 9-12 2008-09 School Year
PARENTS AND STUDENTS: Please carefully read the book requirements, assignment and assessment below. Parents and students may learn more about the below texts, prior to reading, by visiting the local library and/or online sources such as amazon.com., BarnesandNoble.com, etc..
If the parent/guardian has read the child's required book, and prefers that his/her child read a different book, a formal letter must be submitted to the child's teacher regarding specific concerns about the assigned book below with a rationale for choosing the alternative text. Also, the student must bring the alternate text into class the first week of school.
During these summer months, teachers encourage students to read as much as possible, in addition to their assigned summer reading texts, and to keep a reading log with parent signatures towards the 25-book standard. Parents are encouraged to be involved with their child’s choices to support their developmental reading skills, and to share in the joy of the written word. See your local librarian or bookstore for limitless selections!
Summer Assignment: Students, with the exception of Advanced Placement English Grade 12, may keep a hand-written (not typed) reflective journal, with dated entries, which they may hand in during the first week of school for extra credit. This is not supposed to be summaries of chapters, but an interactive reflection/reaction to the novel’s events, characters, conflicts, themes, etc.
Assessment: Students will be assessed on the books assigned. These assessments will count as a test grade(s) for the first quarter, and will take place within the first week of school. At that time, the teacher will collect the extra credit journals and any reading logs with parent signatures.
