LessonsUnit:Getting to Know You
After listening to a poem and hearing the musical version of
Fifteen Animals by Sondra Boynton, students filled
out worksheets describing their interests and
shared them with the class. Students voted on
which story they would like to hear,
Chrisanthmum or Josephina. They created
name plates and looked up
the meaning of their names in various
sources including encyclopedias, baby
name books, and the internet.
Unit:Dewey Decimal System
After learning about the Dewey Decimal System from an
internet presentation, students were divided into
six groups. Each group created a poster representing one
catagory of the Dewey Decimal chart. They used pictures from
magazines and the internet as well as drawings.
Each poster was evaluated by peers using established criteria on a rubric
and the posters with the highest votes were hung on the library walls.
Students in the lower grades will view the posters which are hung
above the actual books and use them as a visual map.
